Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As your state representative, I’m committed to responding to the needs of our communities. In Washington state, we have a citizen legislature. That means, along with my duties as your state representative, I also hold a regular full-time job. However, I’m always happy to meet with you.

Central Washington residents often feel shortchanged when it comes to access to state government. That’s wrong. State government needs to be accessible to all the people of the state—even when they live on the “other” side of the Cascades. That’s why I maintain a district office in Yakima. I encourage residents to call me and schedule a meeting so we can discuss how to make our region and state a better place to live, work and raise a family.

The 14th District office will remain open through December, then close temporarily for two months during the 2020 session, which is scheduled to begin on Jan. 13.

Foster care reform

It’s hard to find anyone who does not agree that more should be done to protect vulnerable children placed in foster care and their families. It’s important to focus on prevention, keeping children with their parents when at all possible, and limiting the time children spend in group facilities.

However, when it’s not possible for a child to stay with their parents, we need to ensure that policies put in place to protect them do not cause any further harm. During the upcoming session, I’m proposing legislation that would lessen the complexities of transferring custody to non-family guardians and create a higher level of support in custody proceedings.

Shannon Love, president of Fostering Change Washington, recently met with me at North Town Coffeehouse in Yakima to discuss how we can do more to help foster children and their families.
