Rep. Chris Corry speaks against bill that will remove Washington’s death penalty statute

In his speech on Senate Bill 5087, Rep. Chris Corry, R-Yakima, explains Democrats disguised a plan to finally repeal Washington’s voter-approved death penalty statute by hiding its removal in a technical fix bill with a long list of statutes that needed to be cleaned up or removed. Unlike previous bills to abolish the death penalty in Washington that included obvious reference to “death penalty” in their titles, Senate Bill 5087 is titled “Defects and Omissions.” Corry criticized the move he says shuts the people of Washington out of what should have been a robust, public discussion and collaboration of the House and Senate and took away the voice of the people in what is expected to ultimately lead to the end of the death penalty in Washington.
