House Republican budget leader Chris Corry issues statement on governor’s proposed 2024 supplemental budget
Rep. Chris Corry, ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee and House Republican budget lead, issued a statement Wednesday following the release of Gov. Jay Inslee’s 2024 supplemental budget plan.
“Since the Legislature adjourned last session, state tax revenue has increased by nearly $3 billion. So it is astonishing that the governor would propose a budget that not only spends that entire $3 billion, but also raids $800 million from the state’s reserves.
“With $3.8 billion more to spend, of course the governor’s proposal includes items we can all support including more funding for special education and critical investments in mental health treatment. But unfortunately, his proposal also includes a number of things House Republicans cannot support. The governor would shift $250 million in subsidies for solar and electric vehicle owners to the capital budget, effectively paying for these programs by reducing funding for public school construction.
“And the governor’s proposal is also notable for what it’s missing. Over the past decade, state spending has more than doubled. Despite serving three terms and authoring 12 operating budgets, the governor once again has not included any serious tax relief for families across the state.
“Budgets are about funding policies that improve the lives of Washington families, not spending every dollar on more bureaucracy just because you can. House Republicans support students, not subsidies that favor the wealthy. We support tax reform that reduces burdens on working families. And we will continue to focus our time and energy on solving issues that matter most to the people of our state.”
