The first week of the 2025 legislative session is behind us. The opening ceremonies of the first few days included the swearing in ceremony for legislators, the outgoing governor’s State of the State Address, and the incoming governor’s Inaugural Address.

The Washington State House of Representatives convenes for the opening day of the 2025 Legislative Session – Jan. 13, 2025.

While much of these events felt very familiar, I was surprised by Gov. Bob Ferguson’s first speech to the Legislature. He sounded like someone who wanted to work across party lines, a noted contrast to what we’ve heard over the past 12 years from former-Gov. Jay Inslee.

Ferguson seemed to support several past and present Republican proposals on how to Fix Washington. He specifically noted our low numbers of cops patrolling our streets (WA ranks last per capita in the nation for law enforcement officers), the need for quick permitting processes for new housing construction, giving money back to farmers who are exempt from Jay Inslee’s carbon tax (Inslee refused this reimbursement), and the need for budget priorities.

As the former Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Committee, I was especially pleased with his acknowledgement that we cannot tax our way out of our state’s budget shortfall. I’m sure this was a surprise to Democrat lawmakers who sat with folded arms and creased brows at this comment.

Many of you know that I was recently elected by my peers to serve as the House Republican Deputy Minority Leader. I will be participating in more leadership activities including responding to statewide media inquiries, setting our agenda, strategic planning to get our message out, and leadership media availabilities.

This week, we responded to Gov. Ferguson’s speech. To hear my initial comments during our Leadership Media Availability, click on the image below (It may take a few seconds to load).

Gun Bills
As in previous years, there is a concerted effort to limit our Second Amendment rights. This is discouraging as these rights are enshrined in both our state and federal constitutions, which should provide ample protections against any infringement. The list below is an example of what’s coming up. I encourage you to click here if you want to testify remotely or have your written testimony submitted to the committee. Just look for the “testify” link after each bill.
