15th District lawmakers secure more than $7.6 million in investments for infrastructure and economic development in capital budget
Rep. Jeremie Dufault and Rep. Chris Corry announced the inclusion of funding of more than $7.6 million for projects benefiting communities across the 15th Legislative District in the Legislature’s capital budget.
“The capital budget allows us to address critical infrastructure needs in the 15th District, and several of these projects are urgent,” said Dufault, R-Selah. “The Roza Canal is leaking, and with the possibility of a low water year ahead, repairs are essential to protect irrigation that farmers rely on. We also need a new Washington State Department of Agriculture Plant Services Lab. The current facility dates back to the 1940s and ’50s, is outdated and unsafe, and houses programs that test crops like apples, pears, and potatoes. These labs play a vital role in protecting Washington agriculture and supporting the farmers who drive our local economy.”
The capital budget focuses on investments in public infrastructure, community facilities, and economic development projects that strengthen local communities and support long-term growth throughout the Yakima Valley and surrounding region.
Corry, R-Yakima, emphasized the importance of directing state resources to projects that directly benefit local residents and support long-term development.
“These projects represent real, practical investments in the people and communities of the Yakima Valley,” said Corry. “Whether it’s improving irrigation infrastructure that supports our farmers or helping local organizations expand services to families in need, the capital budget allows us to strengthen the foundations that keep our region thriving.”
Dufault noted several of the projects were tied to significant safety issues and was pleased that he and Corry were able to get them into the final capital budget.
“Projects like the YWCA renovation of the former St. Elizabeth building will transform an aging structure into a safe, modern facility that serves families facing domestic violence,” said Dufault. “The project addresses serious issues like lead, mold, and asbestos while upgrading the building’s core systems. Investments like this not only improve infrastructure, they also provide critical services and support the well-being of people across the Yakima Valley.”
15th District capital budget projects include:
Roza Canal floor replacement: $3.87 million
WA State Dept. of Agriculture Plant Services Lab: $2.18 million
Roza Canal sealing project: $600,000
Bring It Home II 24-Hour domestic violence shelter: $530,000
Yakima Valley Indoor Youth Sports Complex project: $206,000
Fire Station 52 parking lot safety upgrade: $155,000
Naches Hatchery Raceway refurbishment: $93,000
Refurbish 1950’s Lower Naches Grange #296: $40,000
“Every one of these projects reflects a priority we hear about from local residents, community leaders, and economic partners,” said Corry. “They serve families and young people to help strengthen our communities and ensure the Yakima Valley remains a place where working families can live, work, and thrive.”
The capital budget passed the House and Senate unanimously.
